Engineering Services Examination (ESE) Exam is conducted for recruitment to vacancies in Central Government departments like Indian Railways, Indian Defence, Central Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering and such other Government Departments. candidates who qualify this examination are posted in key positions in these departments, as Grade I Officer engineers. The ESE examination paper is conducted for four branches:
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering, and
  • Civil Engineering.

Tips on How to Prepare for an IES Exam Without Coaching

At least 5 months are required to prepare for ESE 2018 Exam. So now is the high time to begin your preparation if you have not started your preparation for IES ESE. The following tips help you to prepare ESE without any coaching support.
  • Refer the standard books for ESE preparation.
  • Before your preparation, understand the pattern of the exam and revised new syllabus.
  • Prefer the book according to the syllabus. You can also buy any objective books for practising the questions.
  • Plan your schedule to prepare subject wise or topic wise
  • Regularly practice or revise the concepts so that you will not forget until exams. Plan and revise daily or weekly to know the status of preparation and then reschedule according to your preparation.
  • Always practice previous year questions to understand the level of questions and know the importance of topics in Exam.
  • Join test series to practice subject wise and mock tests
  • Keep enough time for revising concepts and formulas after the preparation of each subject.
  • Objective papers are easier and many questions will be repeated from previous year questions and also from objective books.
  • You may need to be clear the concepts which you are studying.
  • Prepare each topic according to Objective and Conventional standard, but practice more objective questions. After objective papers, you will have 4 months of time to revise for conventional practice.
  • If you are good at answering conventional questions, then easy to score in objective papers.
  • Making short notes may get an advantage to recall the concepts and revise such short notes regularly.
  • Remember that calculator is not allowed for objective papers (stage 1), but you can use for conventional papers (stage 2).
  • You must maintain speed and accuracy in attempting the questions of objective papers.
  • Try to select the good resources for ESE preparation.
  • Plenty of resources available on the internet such as Online video lectures, online course lectures, online books, coaching class notes, and free online tests.
  • Don't give a break during your preparation so that you can prepare and revise well.

First take the syllabus. Take individual point. Study it thoroughly. Then solve the questions on that particular topic. Also prepare the questions yourself. Ask yourself that what kind of question may be framed on this topic. And make a particular routine.
