| 1. Scientists have discovered thriving colonies of microbes hundreds of metres beneath the surface of Antarctica’s Ross ice shelf. The findings were published in 2022 in Nature Communications, and a 2024 description of a functional microbial community in seawater under the ice shelf followed. Advertisement

| 2. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio will visit India from 23 May to 26 May 2026. | 3. The United Nations reduced India’s GDP growth forecast for 2026 to 6.4% from the previous projection of 6.6% on 20 May 2026. | 5. On 19 May 2026, India and the Republic of Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Seoul for cooperation in defence, cybersecurity and defence information sharing. | 6. France will host the 52nd G7 Summit in 2026. French President Emmanuel Macron has invited PM Narendra Modi to the G7 Summit. The summit will take place in Évian-les-Bains, Haute-Savoie, France from 15 to 17 June 2026. | 7. India has notified new petrol standards for ethanol blends up to E30. The Bureau of Indian Standards has issued a Gazette notification on 18 May 2026. The specifications notified are E22 E25 E27 and E30 which are petrol blended with 22% 25% 27% and 30% ethanol respectively. भारताने E30 पर्यंतच्या इथेनॉल मिश्रित पेट्रोलसाठी नवीन मानके अधिसूचित केली आहेत. ‘ब्युरो ऑफ इंडियन स्टँडर्ड्स’ने (BIS) 18 मे 2026 रोजी यासंदर्भात एक राजपत्र अधिसूचना जारी केली आहे. अधिसूचित करण्यात आलेली मानके E22, E25, E27 आणि E30 ही असून, यामध्ये अनुक्रमे 22%, 25%, 27% आणि 30% इथेनॉल मिश्रित केलेले पेट्रोल समाविष्ट आहे. |
| 8. Shyam Metalics has announced investment plans of ₹20,000 crore in West Bengal. The expansion plan includes Kharagpur and Jamuria, the two industrial hubs in the state.
