1. A new study lead by Oregon State University has made a new kind of cathode material that is based on iron. It’s possible that this finding could help make batteries for electric cars (EVs) that are better, cheaper, and last longer.

2. In April, Zimbabwe introduced a new currency called the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) with the aim of revitalising their economy. Due to significant economic challenges and previous unsuccessful attempts at establishing currencies, this is the sixth instance within a span of 15 years where a national currency has been attempted.

3. The pressing worldwide issue of climate change necessitates ongoing scientific breakthroughs and technical advancements. The PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in the Far Infrared Experiment) project initiated by NASA commenced on May 25th. This is a significant advancement in climate prediction and understanding.

4. In collaboration with mobile carriers, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has established a novel approach to identify and prevent fraudulent international calls that display Indian phone numbers. This measure was implemented in response to several reports of fraudulent phone calls made by individuals falsely claiming to be police officers, FedEx employees, or representatives from the Department of Telecom (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

5. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has determined that Army Chief Gen. Manoj Pande would continue in his position till June 30. The announcement was released on May 26, a mere day prior to Gen. Pande’s scheduled retirement on May 31. This action has great importance since it is the first instance of a term being prolonged in such a manner since the era of Indira Gandhi, who, during her tenure as Prime Minister, granted an extension to Gen. G. G. Bewoor in the early 1970s.

6. In May 2024, the Indian Central Government provided a substantial amount of financial assistance to the state of Kerala in order to address its economic challenges. The Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology publicly announced this modification on platform X. Until December 2024, the Centre has granted Kerala the authority to borrow a maximum of Rs 21,253 crores.
