The Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences set up the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) as a separate organization in November 1993. A Governing Council runs NIOT, and a director is in charge. The school is in the city of Chennai. India’s exclusive economic zone covers about two-thirds of the country’s land area.
