1. A possible prohibition on the import, propagation, and sale of twenty-four dog varieties is the subject of a request for comments from the central government of India. A prior order, dated March 12, identified the following breeds as hazardous and proposed their prohibition: Pitbull Terriers, Rottweilers, and Mastiffs. On May 2, the Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying issued a public notice soliciting input from stakeholders and the general public regarding this order.

2. The Tamil Nadu Department of School Education has recently issued GCEP guidelines for the abolition of corporal punishment in schools. The guidelines prioritise the protection of students’ physical and mental health and address all forms of harassment, in addition to the prohibition of corporal punishment.

3. The 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 46) and the 26th Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP 26) are scheduled to be held in Kochi, Kerala, India, from May 20th to the 30th, 2024. The MoES and the NCPOR are responsible for organising the event.

4. Ahead of the World Press Freedom Day Conference scheduled for May 3rd, 2024, a new report was published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) that documents an increase in acts of violence directed at environmental correspondents across the globe.

5. According to provisional statistics from the Indian Bureau of Mines, India’s mineral output had an 8.2% year-on-year gain for the period April-February 2023-24. In February 2024, the mining and quarrying sector’s mineral production index reached 139.6, representing an increase of 8.0% compared to February 2023.

6. NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL) and the Bank of Namibia have entered into an agreement to establish a real-time instant payment system modelled after India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI). The new system will expedite Person-to-Person (P2P) and Person-to-Merchant (P2M) transactions, hence advancing financial inclusion for marginalised communities.

7. Arachnologists have just identified the green lynx spider, a species that had not been before discovered. The recently discovered spider species, located in Rajasthan’s Tal Chhapar Wildlife Sanctuary, has been designated as Peucetia chhaparajnirvin.
