1. India has paid USD 32.89 million to the United Nations Regular Budget for 2024, joining the “honour roll” of 36 Member States that have paid all of their regular budget dues to the UN on time.

2. On February 2, 2024, the National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI) Unified Payment Interface (UPI) was formally launched at Paris’ Eiffel Tower. This is an important step towards taking UPI global. The launch coincided with India’s Republic Day celebrations in Paris. PM Modi welcomed the launch, describing it as a significant step towards expanding UPI globally and an encouraging example of promoting digital payments and strengthening India-France ties.

The Indian Navy is preparing to commission its latest survey vessel, Sandhayak (Y-3025), at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.The ship’s primary role is to conduct full-scale hydrographic surveys of ports, harbours, navigational channels/routes, coastal areas, and deep seas in order to facilitate safe maritime navigation.

1. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued guidelines for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to provide equitable opportunities to socioeconomically disadvantaged groups (SEDGs). The guidelines are consistent with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises accessibility, equity, and inclusion in higher education. The UGC recommended that all Indian universities and higher education institutions follow these guidelines to improve educational opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The commission proposed specific courses of action to increase SEDG students’ participation in higher education through access, equity, and inclusion.

2. The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Digital Payments Index, which measures the extent to which payments are digitised across the country, rose to 418.77 in September 2023 from 395.57 in March 2023. “The RBI-DPI index has increased across all parameters and was driven particularly by growth in payment enablers, payment performance, and consumer centricity across the country over the period,” the Reserve Bank of India said in a press release.

3. Poonam Pandey, a 32-year-old Bollywood actor and social media sensation, died of cervical cancer, her team confirmed. Pandey had been battling the disease privately for the past year before succumbing to it. Her untimely death has sparked renewed interest in cervical cancer, its causes, prevention, and early detection.

4. Transparency International recently released its Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023, which shows that most countries have made little to no progress in combating public sector corruption. The CPI ranks 180 countries and territories based on perceived levels of public sector corruption, with scores ranging from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).

5. The Gujarat government has presented a ₹3.32 lakh crore budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, including plans to establish a Fintech Hub at GIFT City, a Semiconductor School in Sanand, and a manufacturing hub for the space sector.

7. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has barred Paytm Payments Bank from onboarding new customers and providing services such as digital wallets and UPI transactions beginning March 1, 2024. This effectively shuts down the majority of the payments bank’s operations. According to the RBI directive, Paytm Payments Bank cannot accept new deposits, issue credit and debit cards, open current and savings accounts, or provide payment aggregation services. It also does not support UPI, IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS transactions, nor does it issue FASTags or Rupay cards.
The bank can only process withdrawals from existing accounts and balances. All pipeline transactions started before March 1 must be settled by March 15.

1. Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, has released India’s first nationwide snow leopard population assessment report, titled “Status Report of Snow Leopards in India”.
The assessment estimates 718 snow leopards in India based on systematic surveys that cover more than 70% of their potential habitat between 2019 and 2023. The Wildlife Institute of India oversaw the Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) programme across the snow leopard range states.

According to the most recent International Energy Agency (IEA) projections in the Electricity 2024 Report, India’s electricity demand will surpass China’s and have the world’s fastest growth rate by 2026.The annual average growth rate in India’s electricity demand is expected to be 6.5% between 2024 and 2026. India’s additional electricity demand over the next three years will be nearly equal to the total demand in the United Kingdom due to its rapid growth.

5. The mascot and logo for the 2024 Khelo India Winter Games were recently revealed. Keeping with the region’s biodiversity, a snow leopard named ‘Sheen-e She’ or Shan has been named the official mascot. The logo incorporates the Indian tricolour as well as Ladakhi symbols.
