1. The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), and other stakeholders will launch the Investment Forum for Advancing Climate Resilient Agrifood Systems in India in New Delhi in January 2024. Over 200 senior government, financial institution, and UN representatives attended the two-day event.

2. The Defence Ministry has signed a ₹1,070 crore contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai to build 14 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPV) for the Indian Coast Guard.

3. The Central government has approved a new three-drug treatment regimen for leprosy patients, with the goal of eliminating disease transmission in India by 2027. 4. The Union Cabinet has sanctioned a ₹8,500 crore viability gap funding (VGF) scheme to facilitate the development of coal gasification projects in India. The objective of this initiative is to promote the utilisation of more environmentally friendly coal technologies for the purpose of generating electricity and manufacturing chemicals.

5. On January 10th, the Election Commission declared the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) the winner, with 30 of 47 seats. The Bhutan Tendrel Party won 17 seats and became the opposition party. This was the fourth election for the National Assembly since democratisation. Voter turnout fell to 63% and 65.6% for the two rounds, compared to 66.36% and 71.46% in 2018.

The Prime Minister has also launched Bharat Parv (organised by the Ministry of Tourism), a nine-day event that will highlight India’s rich diversity and showcase various cultures. On the occasion of Parakram Diwas, the Centre has announced the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar-2024 to recognise the invaluable contributions made by individuals and organisations in the field of disaster management.

1. National Girl Child Day (NGCD) is observed on 24th January every year to shed light on the challenges faced by girls in Indian society.

2. The central government has announced the Bharat Ratna for late Bihar leader Karpoori Thakur, who was born 100 years ago. Thakur, also known as ‘Jannayak’ or people’s leader, served as Chief Minister twice and pioneered social justice policies despite being from a marginalised caste. Major parties in Bihar have long supported bestowing India’s highest civilian honour upon the state icon.
