1. On January 28, 2024, Nitish Kumar, president of the Janata Dal (United), was sworn in as Bihar’s Chief Minister for the record ninth time. He returns to power just 18 months after leaving the BJP-led NDA, marking his fifth such switch since 2015. Six ministers and two deputy chief ministers from the BJP also took oath.
28 जानेवारी 2024 रोजी जनता दल (युनायटेड) चे अध्यक्ष नितीश कुमार यांनी विक्रमी नवव्यांदा बिहारचे मुख्यमंत्री म्हणून शपथ घेतली. भाजपच्या नेतृत्वाखालील NDA सोडल्यानंतर अवघ्या 18 महिन्यांनी ते सत्तेवर परतले, 2015 पासून त्यांचा असा पाचवा स्विच आहे. भाजपच्या सहा मंत्री आणि दोन उपमुख्यमंत्र्यांनीही शपथ घेतली.

2. Researchers from the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) discovered two new species of Congrid eels off the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The species contribute to India’s marine biodiversity knowledge in relatively understudied fish groups such as eels.

3. The military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have announced their immediate withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The surprise exit is being referred to as a “sovereign decision” made without delay.

4. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has delivered its advanced meteorological satellite INSAT-3DS to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota in preparation for its launch. The 2275 kg satellite has completed assembly, integration, and testing at ISRO’s UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru. It is now scheduled for a mid-February liftoff aboard GSLV F 14.
भारतीय अंतराळ संशोधन संस्था (ISRO) ने प्रक्षेपणाच्या तयारीसाठी आपला प्रगत हवामान उपग्रह INSAT-3DS श्रीहरिकोटा येथील सतीश धवन अंतराळ केंद्र (SDSC) येथे वितरित केला आहे. 2275 किलो वजनाच्या या उपग्रहाने बेंगळुरू येथील इस्रोच्या यूआर राव उपग्रह केंद्रात असेंब्ली, एकत्रीकरण आणि चाचणी पूर्ण केली आहे. आता ते GSLV F 14 वर फेब्रुवारीच्या मध्यात लिफ्टऑफसाठी नियोजित आहे.

5. The Indian Air Force (IAF) will hold three major exercises in 2024, emphasising cooperation among India’s defence forces as they work to establish theatre commands. In modern warfare, the primary focus is on integration and coordination.

6. The Ministry of Education recently responded on its official Twitter account to clarify that the reservation policy for central educational institutions remains unchanged. “No reserved post will be de-reserved following the passage of this Act. The Ministry of Education has issued directives to all CEIs to fill vacancies strictly in accordance with the 2019 Act,” the ministry tweeted. This statement followed a backlash from students over the UGC’s draft guidelines, which proposed de-reserving vacant reserved category seats.

1. New Aadhaar cards and digital copies now clearly state that they are “proof of identity, not citizenship or date of birth.” The explicit disclaimers instruct government agencies not to use Aadhaar for confirming citizenship or age. Though foreign residents can obtain Aadhaar after 6 months in India, departments now accept it for services reserved for citizens and adults.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Integrated Industrial Township in Greater Noida (IITGN), a smart township spanning 750 acres. The Rs 1,700 crore project aims to compete with the world’s top manufacturing hubs by providing all required industrial infrastructure and facilities.

The Arambai Tenggol (AT), a Meitei radical group, has received support from Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Manipur’s Imphal Valley, in exchange for a commitment to communicate the people’s concerns to the Centre. Arambai Tenggol began in 2020 as a cultural organisation but quickly evolved into a radical one.
It is one of two hardline Meitei organisations suspected of being involved in the numerous Meitei-Kuki clashes that erupted in May 2023. It is also a revivalist organisation dedicated to reestablishing the pre-Hindu, indigenous Sanamahi religion among Meiteis.
