1. The Union government appointed nine private sector specialists in various fields as joint secretaries in various ministries under its lateral recruitment policy. The appointments were cleared by the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

5. The Central TB (Tuberculosis) Division of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has signed an MoU with Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Mumbai. It aims to explore the appliance of the newest computing technology in its fight against TB.

7. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) extended the banking license of Rupee Cooperative Bank Ltd till November 30, 2019. The Bank paid Rs.338.20 crores to 85,462 needy depositors under the hardship scheme of RBI.

3. French President Emmanuel Macron’s government moves a bill to shrink the country’s parliament by 25 per cent as part of an overhaul of country’s institutions.

5. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved to provide Rs.10,448 per metric tonne (MT) as an export subsidy to sugar mills for the sugar season 2019-20. The entire estimated expenditure of Rs.6,268 crore will be utilized for the export subsidy.

6. Centre plans to achieve 100% electrification of railways in the next 10 years. The announcement was made by the Union Minister Piyush Goyal at the CII’s 14th Sustainability Summit held in New Delhi on 28-29 August 2019.

7. Centre plans to provide Wi-Fi to all villages with connectivity between 10Mbps to 100 Mbps speed under the GramNet initiative. The announcement was made by Minister of State for Communications Shamrao Dhotre at the 36th Foundation Day celebrations of Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), Delhi on 26 August.

7. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the number of Microplastics in drinking water does not pose a health risk at current levels. This is the WHO’s first report into the consequences of microplastics on human health.

5. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has suspended the accreditation of India’s National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) for six months. It is understood that National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) can still carry on with sample collection of blood and urine but will have to get it tested by a different WADA accredited laboratory outside India during the suspension period of NDTL.
