1. The Defence Ministry of India has approved the fourth edition of the Positive Indigenisation List (PIL), which aims to reduce the country’s dependency on imports and boost indigenous manufacturing capabilities. The list includes a range of defence equipment and systems, such as light combat helicopters, transport aircraft, radars, guns, missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The PIL is a crucial initiative of the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) campaign and is expected to enhance the country’s security preparedness while also boosting the domestic defence industry.
भारताच्या संरक्षण मंत्रालयाने सकारात्मक स्वदेशीकरण यादी (PIL) च्या चौथ्या आवृत्तीला मंजुरी दिली आहे, ज्याचा उद्देश देशाची आयातीवरील अवलंबित्व कमी करणे आणि स्वदेशी उत्पादन क्षमतांना चालना देणे आहे. या यादीमध्ये हलकी लढाऊ हेलिकॉप्टर, वाहतूक विमान, रडार, तोफा, क्षेपणास्त्रे आणि मानवरहित हवाई वाहने यासारख्या संरक्षण उपकरणे आणि यंत्रणांचा समावेश आहे. जनहित याचिका हा सरकारच्या ‘आत्मनिर्भर भारत’ (आत्मनिर्भर भारत) मोहिमेचा एक महत्त्वाचा उपक्रम आहे आणि देशांतर्गत संरक्षण उद्योगाला चालना देण्याबरोबरच देशाची सुरक्षा सज्जता वाढवेल अशी अपेक्षा आहे.

2. The CBIC has introduced a new system called the Automated Return Scrutiny Module to make it easier to check whether businesses are complying with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns. The goal is to enhance tax compliance and simplify the scrutiny process.

4. The India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) is scheduled to hold its inaugural Ministerial meeting on May 16 in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting is expected to focus on enhancing trade relations, promoting investments, and expanding technological collaboration between India and the European Union (EU). It will also provide a platform for discussing challenges and exploring opportunities for deepening economic engagement.

5. The scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), have made progress in battery technology by developing a non-aqueous all-organic redox flow battery. This breakthrough in flow battery technology offers significant advantages over conventional batteries, such as greater energy storage capacity without requiring additional space.

8. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the President-Designate of COP28, has urged the oil and gas industry to eliminate methane emissions by 2030 as part of efforts to combat climate change. Methane has been identified as a major contributor to global warming. Al Jaber also called on the industry to align with comprehensive net-zero emission plans by 2050.

1. The Chief Minister of Assam announced that the state government is planning to ban the practice of polygamy through legislative action. To examine the issue, an expert committee will be formed. Polygamy refers to the practice of marrying multiple partners, which is currently legal for certain religious communities in India. The move is seen as a step towards gender equality and women’s empowerment in the state.
आसामच्या मुख्यमंत्र्यांनी घोषणा केली की राज्य सरकार विधिमंडळ कारवाईद्वारे बहुपत्नीत्व प्रथेवर बंदी घालण्याचा विचार करत आहे. या प्रकरणाची तपासणी करण्यासाठी तज्ज्ञांची समिती स्थापन करण्यात येणार आहे. बहुपत्नीत्वाचा संदर्भ अनेक भागीदारांशी विवाह करण्याची प्रथा आहे, जी सध्या भारतातील काही धार्मिक समुदायांसाठी कायदेशीर आहे. राज्यातील स्त्री-पुरुष समानता आणि महिला सक्षमीकरणाच्या दिशेने एक पाऊल म्हणून या हालचालीकडे पाहिले जात आहे.

2. Recently, the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) held the first meeting of the National MSME Council in New Delhi. The council is aimed at providing a platform to the MSME sector to engage with various stakeholders, including the government, financial institutions, and industry bodies. The meeting was chaired by the Union Minister of MSME and was attended by members from various sectors, including industry, academia, and financial institutions. The council discussed several issues related to the growth and development of the MSME sector, including access to finance, technology upgradation, market linkages, and skill development.

In a recent case, the Supreme Court of India ruled that the decision of the former Governor of Maharashtra to call for a Floor Test, asking the then Chief Minister to prove his majority in the house, was not justified. However, the court could not restore his government as he did not face the floor test. The court also held that the actions of the Governor had created a “ceremonial and political” controversy, and that the floor test was a “constitutional and democratic imperative.” The case was related to the political crisis that occurred in Maharashtra in 2019 when a coalition government led by the Shiv Sena collapsed.
